Wintermute CEO Questions Ethereum Leadership Paradox Amid Celebrity Memecoin Controversy

Evgeny Gaevoy, CEO of Wintermute, said that if Ethereum fails in the future, it will not be due to technical shortcomings compared to competitors like Solana. Instead, the central issue is the contradiction in Ethereum’s leadership.
“If ETH fails in the future, it will [won’t] it may be because ‘Solana is faster’, it may be because the [ETH] The “elite” is still stuck in a huge contradiction,” Gaevoy said in a recent article send on X.
His remarks come as a response to the controversy that erupted later Vitalik Buterin’s critique of celebrity memecoins. According to Buterin, projects should aim to provide social value and leave content to participants, rather than focusing on enriching celebrities and early investors.
Buterin’s stance drew a strong rebuke from hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea, who recently launched her own memecoin, MOTHER. He posted a meme showing her holding a baby who resembled Buterin.
Azalea’s photo prompted Uniswap Labs co-founder Hayden Adams to defend Buterin’s role.
She criticized Azalea for downplaying Buterin’s contributions to the crypto community, expressing disappointment that instead of reacting positively and using profits to support social causes, the singer chose to mock Buterin.
No problem with memecoin or celebcoin – I think there is value in memetic attention and it’s great to create markets for it
That said, the purpose and value behind the technology goes far beyond financial gaming. And the best builders in the industry are motivated by positive social motivations… https://t.co/FQhawNl7GP

That’s when Wintermute’s CEO entered the debate and criticized Ethereum’s leadership. He argued that Ethereum leaders are attempting to create a capitalist blockchain system while simultaneously addressing social issues, a position he considers inherently contradictory.
“You’re either building capitalism or planned socialism. I’m really sorry [can’t] have both,” Gaevoy added.
Gaevoy’s comments sparked controversy among members of the crypto industry. Many disagreed with his point of view, saying that being against celebrity memecoins is not the same as building a socialist system.
I’m not sure how Hayden and Vitalik saying that not liking certain trends means that they are against capitalism (or that they are no longer involved in building capitalist systems)
They both have a certain vision for cryptocurrencies, in terms of the types of things people will build and what people…

Sorry, but how are Vitalik or Hayden building socialism?
Be against the obvious obstacles! = build socialism

In response to these disagreements, Gaevoy said that it all came down to the underlying principle.
According to him, if capitalism is the foundation, integrating elements to mitigate its negative impacts is beneficial. However, if the primary goal is “social justice” or the creation of “only good things,” capitalism should not be an afterthought.
For me this is the primary guiding principle. If your core guiding principle is capitalism and then you take additional steps to make it less harmful, I’m all for it.
If your guiding principle is, I don’t know, “social justice” or “only good things should be built” and then you attach…
