Token distribution tactics should focus on real value, not hype, says Uniswap founder

While initial interest in blockchain projects may be sparked by marketing strategies like airdrops, what really matters is what keeps users engaged with the project in the long term. Uniswap founder Hayden Adams shared his opinion on the good distribution of tokens, suggesting that token marketing should focus on providing real value, rather than simply creating hype.

“Don’t market the price of tokens: If you tweet about how your token will sell like hotcakes or hire influencers or marketing firms to do so, I assume you’re just trying to get rich quick instead of creating real value,” Adam noted in a recent discussion on the ethics of token distribution.

Adam also outlined several principles that he believes should guide token distribution, including avoiding ambiguous teasers and the need for real liquidity from day one.

“Not cultivating farmers: teasing and creating ambiguity around a token distribution to boost your numbers is bad behavior. If you don’t know yet, don’t speculate publicly. If you know but aren’t ready to share all the details, don’t reveal them. Share the real details when you are ready,” Adam said.

He also criticized the creation of low-float tokens, which he considers “harmful,” and the manipulation of token supply to exploit unit distortion.

“You don’t need to work with exchanges or market makers. It’s that easy. Simply distribute enough tokens publicly for real price discovery to occur on DEX. People shouldn’t start thinking in FDV [market cap] when evaluating these things,” Adam noted.

“Don’t create an absurdly high token supply for unit-biased farmers, that’s also bad behavior,” he added.

Adam also advised against greed in distributing tokens. According to him, giving away a significant portion of tokens to the community demonstrates a commitment to community growth and trust.

“If you feel the community doesn’t deserve a significant sum, don’t issue a token,” he said.

The founder of Uniswap emphasized the importance of making thoughtful and well-considered decisions regarding the distribution of tokens. According to him, projects should be able to support their choices with confidence and clear reasoning, without having to constantly defend or apologize for their actions.

“Put a lot of thought and care into your decisions, so you can back them up and explain your reasons. Don’t end up in a situation where you’re arguing or apologizing with Crypto Twitter. Create something you can be proud of and stand behind it,” she said.

Adam’s comments follow recent debates over token launches and the distribution of several major projects, which have attracted mixed opinions from communities after announcing their tokenomics.

A highly anticipated token launch by LayerZero has also received criticism and praise for its approach to Sybil’s behavior.
