Leo Messi Promotes Water Meme Coin On Solana
- Leo Messi Promotes Cryptocurrencies to Solana on His Official Instagram Profile
- When PSG signed Messi, they also paid him in cryptocurrency
- Water boasts of being a charity project
Yesterday, the famous Argentine soccer player Leo Messi promoted Solana cryptocurrency on his Instagram stories. It is called Water. It is a Solana meme coin that aims to positively impact the real world. The official Water Instagram account then thanked Messi for sharing.
Leo Messi and Crypto
Messi has been interested in cryptocurrencies for a while now, having partnered with the Bitget exchange a few years ago.
It is worth mentioning that last year he helped launch Bitget’s cryptocurrency education project, Blockchain4Youth. The goal was to inspire young people to adopt Web3 and crypto tools and create a blockchain-based future.
Before starting to collaborate with Biget in 2022, the footballer had never promoted or sponsored initiatives related to cryptocurrencies.
He may have first encountered cryptocurrencies in 2021, when Barcelona sold him to Paris Saint-Germain, who were partnering with Socios at the time.
Payment in cryptocurrency
The news caused a bit of a stir because one of the two best footballers in the world at the time had accepted that part of his salary be paid in cryptocurrencies.
At the time, Socios was launching several new tokens from various football teams, including Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
When Messi was bought by PSG, he also received some PSG tokens as part of the deal. The team said it was the first time a top-level soccer player had been paid in crypto tokens.
With the onset of the bear market, the PSG token lost much of its appeal. After reaching an all-time high of nearly $59 in April of that year, just months before Messi’s arrival, the price dropped significantly the following year to $5. In 2023, it dropped again to less than $3.
The initial price in 2020 was $5, so it was a real crash. Moreover, even in 2024, it continues to fall. Its all-time low was touched a few days ago at $2.35.
It seems that Messi has not promoted the Paris Saint-Germain token much over time. Last year it was sold to Internacional Miami, so it has been almost a year since the Argentine footballer had anything to do with that token.
It is also possible that Messi sold the large amount of PSG tokens he received when he signed the contract with the team, given the collapse in the value of the PSG token.
Memecoin on Solana: Leo Messi is promoting a new cryptocurrency called WATER
He decided to promote a memecoin on Solana instead: Watercoin (WATER).
The Watercoin team states on their official Instagram that meme coins can be quite volatile, but also states that Water is “the next big meme coin on Solana with a mission to have a net positive impact on the real world.”
It’s hard to imagine how a meme coin could be associated with water in a way that would have a positive impact on the real world.
The WATER token, issued on the Solana blockchain, entered the cryptocurrency markets just a few weeks ago.
Since then, the price has dropped by 40 percent, but yesterday it suddenly went from $0.0003 to $0.0014 after Messi’s Instagram story. The initial price was $0.0022, so it was still in the negative zone. Then it dropped below $0.0010 for the rest of the day.
Solana Crypto Project Promoted by Leo Messi
The Water Team claims that their initiative is a charity project. It looks like their site is promoting token purchases on the home page. They even say that the Water token would be as scarce as Bitcoin.
In addition, they claim that in the future, charity initiatives related to the project will attract the attention of millions of people, which suggests that they have not yet been organized.
They also offer rewards to anyone who purchases this token.
It looks like this is just a presale for a token that will be sold later.
Maybe in the future the Watercoin team will invent something concrete related to water, but for now we only know that they are selling this token they invented.
