Ethereum researcher alleges biased coverage of Solana to Wikipedia

Ethereum researcher Emmanuel Awosika posted allegations on X that Wikipedia has an anti-crypto stance, with its coverage of Solana, in particular, being unfair. Awosika’s allegations also call into question Molly White’s involvement in writing crypto-related articles on the platform.
“[…] People have complained about Wikipedia’s coverage of the crypto industry, but I never understood the problem until someone made a “Wikipedia Is Going Great” joke referencing the implication Molly’s potential in editing crypto-related articles, “Awosika said on X.
Awosika is referring to Molly White’s project, Web3 is Just Fine, which tracks seemingly questionable happenings in the crypto industry that are “not actually going as well as its supporters would have you believe.”
The Ethereum researcher then called Wikipedia’s editing style “absolute garbage” and added that such a coverage framework would be unreliable. Images shared in Awosika’s post show historic coverage of Solana, where Wikipedia cites articles from Reuters, The Verge and Fortune Crypto. most recent edit on the Solana page is dated March 17, 2024.
“I wouldn’t tackle this project if Wikipedia was my primary source of information,” Awosika argued.
Molly White responded by saying that although her involvement with Wikipedia is public knowledge, decisions within the organization are made independently and “openly.”
Awosika argued that Wikipedia has a “clearly anti-crypto stance,” highlighting its refusal to accept cryptocurrency donations and its alleged history of failing to report on cryptocurrency topics. White countered this claim by pointing out that the Wikimedia Foundation also does not accept livestock donations, but still manages to “write articles about cows.”
Awosika shared images from Wikipedia’s Solana page that detail the platform’s lawsuits, outages, and hacks, as well as its suffering due to the collapse of FTX. He wondered if a protocol like Solana was limited to just negative events.
White is a known critic of the crypto industry and writes perspectives on misinformation and the values of free and open access. White recently published a essay on Bloomberg stating that the underlying technology of cryptography “doesn’t have much to offer the average person in their daily lives.”
“[…] feel free to go and see how I was involved, rather than just speculating about what you think I did. I don’t think it’s true that Wikipedia has a “clearly anti-crypto stance”, White said.
Awosika insinuates that White’s involvement in Wikipedia influenced the platform to reject crypto donations in May 2022, affirming that they were “extremely risky” and “inherently predatory.”
White emphasized that his involvement in editing Solana’s Wikipedia page was limited to a single grammatical change, to correct the wrong capitalization of “non-fungible token”. This represents 0.2% of the total changes made to the page.
White explained that most information about crypto projects, even large ones like Solana, is limited to industry publications, which generally do not pass the mark of reliable provision on Wikipedia. She emphasized that Wikipedia articles are based on what reliable secondary sources have to say about a subject, not what a subject has to say about itself.
